Gable Roof Calculator
Calculate dual-slope gable roof dimensions, total sloped surface area, rafter slope lengths, ridge length, and required roofing squares.
Gable Roof Structure
A classic gable roof consists of two symmetrical sloping sides that meet at a central ridge, forming triangular gables at both ends.
How to Use This Calculator
Estimating materials and framing dimensions for a classic gable roof requires entering four primary building measurements into the calculator UI above:
- House Length (feet): The exterior wall length of the main building parallel to the roof ridge board.
- House Width / Span (feet): The exterior wall width of the building perpendicular to the ridge line.
- Roof Pitch (X / 12): The vertical rise in inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run (e.g., enter 5 for a 5/12 pitch).
- Overhang (inches): The horizontal eave and gable extension past the exterior walls (standard overhang is 12 to 18 inches).
Once entered, click Calculate Gable Roof to instantly view total sloped deck surface area, required roofing squares, ridge board length, and common rafter slope lengths.
What Is a Gable Roof & How Does the Calculation Work?
The gable roof is the most recognized architectural roof style in residential construction. It features two sloping planes that meet at a peak horizontal ridge, leaving triangular wall sections (called gables) at opposing ends.
To calculate the exact surface area of a gable roof, the calculator executes three geometric steps:
- 1. Adjusted Footprint Dimensions: Overhang distances are added to both house length and house width.
- 2. Sloped Rafter Hypotenuse: Half of the building span (the horizontal run) is multiplied by the roof pitch area factor
√(1 + (Pitch / 12)²)to determine actual sloped rafter length. - 3. Total Surface Area: The sloped rafter length is multiplied by the adjusted building ridge length and multiplied by 2 to cover both symmetrical roof slopes.
Gable Roof Formulas & Mathematics
Worked Numerical Example
Let's work through a practical framing estimation example for a suburban home:
Building Data: House Length = 40 ft. House Width (Span) = 28 ft. Roof Pitch = 5/12. Overhang = 12 inches (1.0 ft).
- Adjusted Building Length: 40 ft + 1 ft + 1 ft = 42.0 ft.
- Adjusted Building Width: 28 ft + 1 ft + 1 ft = 30.0 ft.
- Half-Span (Run): 30.0 ft / 2 = 15.0 ft.
- 5/12 Pitch Multiplier: √(5² + 12²) / 12 = √169 / 12 = 1.08333.
- Single Slope Rafter Length: 15.0 ft × 1.08333 = 16.25 ft.
- Total Roof Deck Area (Both Slopes): 2 × (16.25 ft × 42.0 ft) = 1,365.0 sq ft.
- Roofing Squares: 1,365.0 / 100 = 13.65 Squares.
Understanding Your Result & Ordering Considerations
The results provided by the calculator represent net roof deck surface dimensions. When ordering building materials, consider the following practical contractor guidelines:
- Shingle Waste Factor: Always add 10% extra material for simple gable roofs (or 15% if the roof features dormers or valley intersections) to cover cuts along rake edges and starter strips.
- Ridge Board Deduction: Rafter length calculations represent line length from wall plate to ridge center. Framers subtract half the thickness of the ridge board (e.g., 0.75 in for 2x lumber) when marking top plumb cuts.
- Underlayment & Drip Edge: Order synthetic underlayment rolls based on total square footage (1 roll usually covers 1,000 sq ft or 10 squares). Drip edge flashing should equal total perimeter linear feet (2 × Ridge Length + 4 × Rafter Length).

A gable roof consists of two symmetrical sloping sides that meet at a central ridge board, forming triangular end walls (gables). Its surface area is measured by calculating the sloped rafter length for one side, multiplying by the total building length including eave overhangs, and doubling the result for both slopes.
Eave and gable overhangs extend 12 to 24 inches past the exterior walls to shed rainwater away from siding and foundations. Omitting overhangs leads to underestimating roof surface area and shingle materials by 5% to 10%.
Roofing squares are calculated by dividing the total sloped roof deck surface area (in square feet) by 100. For example, a gable roof with 1,365 sq ft of surface area equals 13.65 roofing squares.
The calculator reports exact net roof deck surface area. Contractors typically add a 10% waste factor for standard gable roofs (or 15% for complex multi-gable layouts) to account for cuts along rake edges, starter strips, and ridge caps.
