Roof Shingle Calculator
Calculate total roofing squares, required asphalt shingle bundle packages, actual sloped area, and waste factor allowances.
Material Standards
- 1 Roofing Square: 100 square feet of roof area.
- 3 Bundles = 1 Square: Most 3-tab & architectural shingles pack 3 bundles per square.
- Waste Percentage: Standard gable roofs add 10%; complex hip/valley roofs add 15%.
How to Use This Calculator
To estimate complete shingle bundle and accessory requirements for a re-roofing project, enter your project details into the calculator UI above:
- Calculation Basis: Select whether you are entering direct Sloped Roof Deck Area or Building Footprint + Pitch.
- Roof Deck Area (sq ft): Total sloped surface deck area (or building footprint dimensions).
- Waste Allowance (%): Select 10% for gable roofs, 15% for hip roofs, or 20% for complex multi-valley roofs.
- Eave & Ridge Lengths: Enter linear feet of eaves for starter strips and linear feet of ridge for hip/ridge cap bundles.
Click Calculate Shingles to view main field shingle bundles, roofing squares, starter strip bundles, ridge cap bundles, and underlayment rolls.
How Shingle Quantities Are Estimated
Estimating shingles accurately requires understanding commercial packaging standards:
- 1 Roofing Square = 100 Square Feet of covered deck area.
- 3 Bundles = 1 Roofing Square for standard 3-tab and architectural dimensional shingles (approx 33.3 sq ft coverage per bundle).
- Starter Strip Bundles: Cover approximately 100 linear feet of perimeter eaves and rakes per bundle.
- Hip & Ridge Cap Bundles: Cover approximately 25 to 35 linear feet of ridge line per bundle.
Formulas & Material Estimation Mathematics
Worked Numerical Example
Let's calculate a complete shingle material order for a home with 2,200 sq ft of sloped roof area, 140 linear feet of eaves, and 60 linear feet of ridge:
Input Specs: Sloped Area = 2,200 sq ft. Waste Factor = 15% (1.15). Eave Feet = 140 ft. Ridge Feet = 60 ft.
- Sloped Area with 15% Waste: 2,200 sq ft × 1.15 = 2,530 sq ft.
- Total Net Roofing Squares: 2,530 / 100 = 25.3 Squares.
- Main Field Shingle Bundles: 25.3 × 3 = 75.9 → 76 Bundles.
- Starter Strip Bundles: 140 ft / 100 = 1.4 → 2 Starter Bundles.
- Ridge Cap Bundles: 60 ft / 30 = 2 Ridge Cap Bundles.
- Synthetic Underlayment Rolls (10 Sq/roll): 25.3 / 10 = 2.53 → 3 Underlayment Rolls.
Total Shingle Order: 76 Field Bundles + 2 Starter Bundles + 2 Ridge Cap Bundles = 80 Total Bundles!
Roof Complexity & Important Purchasing Considerations
When purchasing shingles, account for these crucial installation factors:
- Shingle Style Sizing: Standard architectural shingles weigh approximately 60–80 lbs per bundle (3 bundles/square). Heavy specialty slate-look shingles may require 4 to 5 bundles per square due to weight limits per package.
- Roofing Nails: Allow 4 nails per shingle (approx 320 nails per square, or 1 box of coil nails per 10 to 12 squares). In high wind zones, 6 nails per shingle are required by code.
- Ice & Water Shield Membrane: Order 2-square rolls (200 sq ft) for eaves and valleys in northern climates to prevent ice dam moisture intrusion.

A 2,000 sq ft sloped roof deck equals 20 roofing squares. Including a standard 10% waste factor (22 squares total), you will need 66 bundles of shingles.
One standard bundle of 3-tab or architectural dimensional shingles covers 33.3 square feet. Exactly 3 bundles cover 1 full roofing square (100 square feet).
Starter shingles are installed along eave and rake perimeters before the first course of main shingles to seal edge overlaps against wind uplift and prevent water infiltration.
Standard hip and ridge cap shingle bundles cover approximately 25 to 35 linear feet per bundle along ridge lines and diagonal hip intersections.
