Rafter Calculator
Determine exact common rafter length, overhang extension, ridge rise, and total timber length required for roof framing.
Rafter Framing Terms
- Roof Span: Total outside-to-outside building width.
- Building Run: Half of the total roof span.
- Common Rafter: The diagonal rafter extending from wall plate to ridge board.
How to Use This Calculator
To calculate exact framing cuts for a common roof rafter, enter the following structural parameters into the input fields above:
- Building Span (feet): Total outside wall-to-wall width of the building structure.
- Roof Pitch (X / 12): Vertical rise per 12 inches of run (e.g., enter 6 for a 6/12 pitch).
- Overhang (inches): Horizontal eave extension past the exterior wall top-plate (default is 12 inches).
- Ridge Board Thickness (inches): Actual thickness of the central ridge lumber (1.5 inches for standard 2x dimensional lumber).

What Is a Roof Rafter & How Is Length Calculated?
A roof rafter is a structural sloping lumber beam that extends from the wall top-plate up to the ridge board, supporting roof sheathing, underlayment, and shingles. Because a rafter forms the hypotenuse of a right triangle, its line length is computed using the Pythagorean theorem (A² + B² = C²).
Framing a common rafter involves four precise calculations:
- 1. Horizontal Run: Total building span divided by 2 (half-span).
- 2. Theoretical Line Length: Horizontal run multiplied by the rafter pitch factor
√(1 + (Pitch / 12)²). - 3. Ridge Plumb Cut Deduction: Subtracting half the thickness of the ridge board (0.75 in for 2x lumber) from the top plumb cut.
- 4. Eave Overhang Tail: Multiplying overhang run by the pitch factor and adding it to the lower end past the bird's mouth notch.
Rafter Formulas & Framing Trigonometry
Worked Numerical Example
Let's step through a complete framing layout for a 24-foot building span with a 6/12 pitch:
Input Specs: Span = 24 ft. Pitch = 6/12. Ridge Thickness = 1.5 in (0.125 ft). Overhang = 12 in (1.0 ft).
- Horizontal Run: 24.0 ft / 2 = 12.0 ft.
- 6/12 Rafter Pitch Factor: √(6² + 12²) / 12 = √180 / 12 = 1.11803.
- Theoretical Line Length: 12.0 ft × 1.11803 = 13.416 ft (161.0 inches).
- Ridge Plumb Cut Deduction: 1.5 in / 2 = 0.75 inches (0.0625 ft).
- Adjusted Rafter Length: 161.0 in - 0.75 in = 160.25 inches (13 ft 4.25 in).
- Overhang Tail Length: 1.0 ft × 1.11803 = 1.118 ft (13.42 inches).
- Total Lumber Board Length Needed: 160.25 in + 13.42 in = 173.67 inches (14 ft 5.67 in).
Framing Purchase: Order 16-foot 2x6 or 2x8 boards to cut each rafter with zero lumber deficit!
Important Framing & Bird's Mouth Cut Considerations
Calculated line lengths provide perfect layout guidelines, but job-site execution requires attention to structural framing codes:
- Bird's Mouth Notch Rules: The seat cut (horizontal notch resting on top wall plate) should provide full bearing across the 3.5-inch plate width. Never cut deeper than 1/3 of the rafter board depth to prevent structural splitting under load.
- Collar Ties & Rafter Ties: High roofs require horizontal collar ties in the upper third of the rafter span to resist wind uplift, and rafter ties (or ceiling joists) at the bottom plate to prevent wall spreading.
- Lumber Purchase Sizing: Always round total overall rafter length up to the next standard 2-foot lumber increment (12 ft, 14 ft, 16 ft, 18 ft, 20 ft) when placing yard orders.

Rafter line length is the theoretical mathematical hypotenuse distance from the top wall plate edge to the ridge center line. Board length is the total physical lumber length you must purchase, which includes the eave overhang tail.
Subtract half of the actual thickness of the ridge board measured perpendicular to the plumb cut. For standard 2x lumber (1.5 inches actual thickness), deduct 0.75 inches (3/4 in) from the top plumb cut.
Building codes specify that the vertical depth of a bird's mouth seat notch must not exceed 1/3 of the total depth of the rafter board to maintain structural strength against roof loads.
Rafter size (2x6, 2x8, 2x10, or 2x12) depends on horizontal span distance, wood species, roof pitch, and local snow dead-load building codes. Always consult local span tables before framing.
