Anatomy of a Roof Rafter
Framing a roof deck requires precise rafter calculations to ensure structural integrity and tight joints at the ridge board and wall top-plate. Before calculating dimensions, familiarize yourself with these key rafter framing components:
- Common Rafter: The primary sloped lumber member extending from the exterior wall top-plate up to the central ridge board.
- Line Length: The theoretical mathematical hypotenuse length from the outer edge of the wall plate to the center line of the ridge board.
- Ridge Deduction: Half of the actual thickness of the ridge board (e.g., 0.75 inches for 2x dimensional lumber), subtracted from the upper plumb cut.
- Bird's Mouth Notch: The triangular cut in the rafter that rests flat on the top wall plate.
- Overhang Tail: The extended lower portion of the rafter hanging past the exterior wall to form the eaves.
The Rafter Length Formula (Pythagorean Theorem)
Because a roof rafter forms the hypotenuse of a right triangle, its line length is calculated using the Pythagorean theorem or pitch rafter multipliers:
Step 1: Determine Effective Building Run
To find the horizontal run of your common rafter, measure the total outside building span (from wall to wall) and divide by 2.
Building Run = Total Outside Building Span / 2.
For example, if your garage building span measures 24 feet outside-to-outside, your run is 24 / 2 = 12 feet.
Step 2: Calculate Common Rafter Line Length
Multiply your building run by the rafter multiplier for your roof pitch. For a 6/12 pitch (multiplier = 1.1180):
Theoretical Line Length = 12 ft × 1.1180 = 13.416 feet (13 feet 5 inches).
Step 3: Deduct for Ridge Board Thickness
The theoretical line length extends to the center of the roof ridge. Because the rafter meets a physical wooden ridge board, you must subtract half the thickness of the ridge board measured perpendicular to the plumb cut:
If using a standard 2x8 ridge board (actual thickness = 1.5 inches), half the thickness is 1.5 / 2 = 0.75 inches (3/4 in).
Adjusted Line Length = Theoretical Line Length - 0.75 inches.
Step 4: Add Eave Overhang Tail Length
If your roof design includes eave overhangs (e.g., 12 inches or 18 inches past the exterior wall), calculate the additional rafter tail length using the same pitch multiplier:
Tail Length = Overhang Run × Pitch Multiplier.
For a 12-inch (1 ft) overhang on a 6/12 pitch: 1 ft × 1.1180 = 1.118 ft (13.42 inches).
Complete Worked Example: 24-Foot Building Framing
Let's compile all four steps for a complete rafter cutting estimate:
Project Specs: Building Span = 24 ft. Roof Pitch = 6/12 (Multiplier = 1.1180). Ridge Board = 2x8 (1.5" thick). Eave Overhang = 12 in (1.0 ft).
1. Run Calculation: 24 / 2 = 12.0 ft.
2. Line Length: 12.0 × 1.1180 = 13.416 ft = 161.0 inches.
3. Ridge Deduction: 161.0 - 0.75 = 160.25 inches (13 ft 4.25 in).
4. Overhang Tail: 1.0 × 1.1180 = 1.118 ft = 13.42 inches.
5. Total Overall Board Length to Order: 160.25 + 13.42 = 173.67 inches (14 ft 5.67 in).
Lumber Purchase Recommendation: Order standard 16-foot 2x6 or 2x8 boards to cut each common rafter with zero waste!
Cutting Birds-Mouth Notches
The bird's mouth cut consists of two perpendicular cuts: the horizontal seat cut (resting on top of the wall plate) and the vertical heel cut (flushing against the exterior wall sheathing). The seat cut should never exceed 1/3 of the total rafter depth to maintain structural load strength.

Deduct half of the actual thickness of the ridge board. For standard 1.5-inch thick 2x lumber, deduct 0.75 inches (3/4 in) from the top plumb cut.
2x6 and 2x8 dimensional lumber are most common for standard residential rafter spans. Longer spans or heavy snow zones require 2x10 or 2x12 engineered lumber.
Building code restricts the vertical depth of a bird's mouth notch to no more than 1/3 of the total rafter board depth to prevent structural splitting.
