Roof Square Footage Calculator
Determine total sloped roof square footage and roofing squares from home footprint dimensions and pitch steepness.
Understanding Roofing Squares
In the roofing trade, 1 Square equals 100 square feet. A 1,610 sq ft roof equals approximately 16.1 roofing squares.
How to Use This Calculator
To calculate sloped roof deck square footage and total roofing squares, enter your building parameters into the fields above:
- Building Length (feet): Total exterior wall length parallel to the ridge line.
- Building Width (feet): Total exterior wall width perpendicular to the ridge line.
- Roof Pitch (X / 12): Vertical rise in inches per 12 inches of run (e.g., 7 for a 7/12 pitch).
- Overhang (inches): Eave and gable extension past exterior walls (default is 12 inches).

What Is Roof Square Footage & Roofing Squares?
Roof square footage is the total surface area of the inclined roof deck where sheathing, underlayment, and roofing materials are installed. Because commercial material suppliers sell roofing products in units of 100 square feet, contractors convert square footage into Roofing Squares.
For example, a roof deck measuring 2,400 square feet equals exactly 2,400 / 100 = 24 Roofing Squares. Understanding total square footage allows accurate budgeting for shingles, underlayment rolls, starter strips, and labor rates.
Formulas & Square Footage Mathematics
Worked Numerical Example
Let's calculate total roof square footage for a home with a 35 ft × 45 ft footprint and a 7/12 pitch:
Input Specs: Length = 45 ft. Width = 35 ft. Pitch = 7/12. Overhang = 12 inches (1.0 ft).
- Adjusted Building Length: 45 ft + 1 ft + 1 ft = 47.0 ft.
- Adjusted Building Width: 35 ft + 1 ft + 1 ft = 37.0 ft.
- Adjusted Flat Footprint Area: 47.0 ft × 37.0 ft = 1,739.0 sq ft.
- 7/12 Pitch Area Multiplier: √(7² + 12²) / 12 = √193 / 12 = 1.15778.
- Sloped Roof Deck Square Footage: 1,739.0 sq ft × 1.15778 = 2,013.38 sq ft.
- Net Roofing Squares: 2,013.38 / 100 = 20.13 Squares.
- Order Quantity with 10% Waste Factor: 2,013.38 × 1.10 = 2,214.7 sq ft (22.15 Squares / 67 Bundles).
Factoring Waste & Complex Roof Layouts
When purchasing shingles and underlayment, always apply a waste allowance to cover cut-offs along hips, valleys, gables, and plumbing penetrations:
- Simple Gable Roofs: Add 10% waste (multiplier 1.10).
- Standard Hip Roofs: Add 12% to 15% waste (multiplier 1.12 to 1.15).
- Complex Multi-Valley Roofs: Add 15% to 20% waste (multiplier 1.15 to 1.20).

In roofing terminology, one 'Square' equals exactly 100 square feet of roof surface deck area. Materials like shingles, felt underlayment, and metal panels are measured and sold in squares.
Roof square footage includes sloped deck expansion caused by roof pitch incline, plus eave and gable overhang extensions that protrude 12 to 24 inches past exterior walls.
Standard 3-tab and architectural dimensional shingles require 3 bundles to cover 1 roofing square (100 square feet).
Add 10% waste factor for simple gable roofs, 12% to 15% for standard hip roofs, and 15% to 20% for complex multi-valley roofs with dormers.
